Who is Waiting

Ages
Most referrals are children age 7 and older. Referrals of children under 3 are rare, because it takes time for referrals to go through the system.
SIBLINGS
Groups of two and three are the most common adoption referrals. Kyrgyz policy keeps brothers and sisters together, so families open to siblings receive referrals sooner.
Boys and Girls
More boys than girls are waiting. A family open to a boy shortens its expected wait; a family requesting a girl extends it. A family open to siblings and children with special needs will, most likely, move through the queue faster.
Health
Referral files document medical and developmental needs, and children may have a wide range – from minor and correctable conditions to ongoing treatment.
WHERE THEY LIVE
Children waiting in Kyrgyzstan live in orphanages. While region specific, for the most part there are large scale institutions of centralized care.
